About Mental Health First Aid (Standard)
Mental Health First Aid (Standard), provides participants with the skills to recognise a mental health crisis, respond appropriately and support the individual in recovery by applying what has been shown by research to be effective. MHFA Training has been well evaluated in workplace and community settings. The evaluations found the training to be effective in:
Improving mental health awareness and literacy
Reducing stigma around mental illness
Implementing early intervention
Mental Health First Aid teaches adults how to provide initial support to adults who are developing a mental illness or experiencing a mental health crisis. Participants will be educated on the signs and symptoms of mental health problems, together with how, what, when and where to administer first aid in a developing or crisis situation.
Developing mental health problems covered:
- Depression
- Anxiety
- Psychosis
- Substance use disorder
Mental health crises covered:
- Suicidal thoughts and behaviours
- Non-suicidal self-injury
- Panic attacks
- Traumatic events
- Severe psychotic states
- Severe effects from alcohol or other drug use
- Aggressive behaviours
