Mental Health with FIVEaa

From July to February, Breakthrough will once again be participating in monthly radio segments on FIVEaa with Afternoons with Stacey Lee. We’ll be sharing mental health stories and the impact that mental health research can provide.

In this episode, we discuss the role women are playing in the mental health sector, focusing on the contributions of Breakthrough to community mental health initiatives.

The episode features Little Heroes Professor of Child and Adolescent Mental Health – and emerging world leader in youth mental health – Dr Bridi O’Dea.

In this episode, we discuss the importance of the Big Talks for Little People and mental health programs for young Indigenous children.

The episode features internationally recognised award-winning academic, mentor, speaker, & researcher, Professor Shane Pill from Flinders University.

Veteran mental health has become a critical national issue, especially in light of The Royal Commission into Defence and Veterans Suicide, which revealed alarming rates of suicide and mental illness among veterans.

With insights from both Breakthrough CEO John Mannion and ADF veteran Professor Ben Wadham, this segment explores the current state of veteran mental health and what actions are being taken to address the crisis.

October is Mental Health Month, and the theme is ‘Let’s Talk About It’ so in this episode we share a powerful story. Greg Ireland and Magda Pearce are participating in the New York Marathon in November as part of Chelsea Ireland’s bucket list – a list discovered by Greg and his wife after their daughter Chelsea and Magda’s son Lukasz tragically passed in 2020. Greg, alongside Magda, has found purpose in completing this list, strengthening the bond between the two grieving families.

The marathon is more than just a race for Greg and Magda; it’s an emotional tribute to Chelsea and Lukasz, their children. Both families have turned their grief into action by supporting Breakthrough, raising funds and awareness for mental health research. This interview explores their incredible journey of resilience, the role of mental health in their healing, and how they are honouring their children’s legacy.

Joining them is Breakthrough CEO John Mannion, who is also participating in the marathon to support the cause and raise funds for mental health research. Together, they share their personal stories, the significance of mental health advocacy during Mental Health Month, and the impact of the marathon on their own journeys.
