The Mental Health Space with Alan Hickey airs fortnightly on FIVEaa Adelaide.

The “Mental Health Space” was set up as part of FIVEaa’s approach to help normalise the mental health conversation. During the past year, we have covered topics such as Bullying, PTSD, Eating Disorders, Anxiety, Depression and suicide. The conversations have been engaging, challenging and insightful, connecting the lived experience story with Breakthrough and investment into targeted mental health research.

We spend about a third of our lives asleep, so it’s no surprise that sleep is important for our day-to-day lives. Sleep is vital because it serves several functions which are necessary for human survival.

The first function relates to the physical need for our bodies to rest. The body requires periods of sleep to grow muscle, repair tissue and synthesise hormones. The second function is about cognition and helping to consolidate memories.

But what is the science behind it?

Listen to Alan Hickey and John Mannion discuss the importance of sleep to your mental health with Professor Danny Eckert: Director, Adelaide Institute for Sleep Health (AISH): A Flinders Centre of Research Excellence, College of Medicine and Public Health, Flinders University

This show first aired on Tuesday, 29 October 2019.
