MEET THE SPECIAL GUESTS

Suzi Evans

When it comes to mental health and suicide, few people have the lived experience, subject matter knowledge, and drive of Suzi Evans. In 2018, Suzi’s life was forever altered when police delivered heartbreaking news to her farm—the loss of her beloved son, Murray, known as Muzz, who had taken his own life, just two months before his 30th birthday.

The pain was unimaginable, shattering Suzi and her family. But from that darkness, Suzi unearthed resilience and purpose. Her journey toward healing led her to positive psychology and wellbeing. Discovering these tools allowed her to effectively function with her grief, she became a certified trainer, determined to help others. Now, Suzi is one of Australia’s most dedicated advocates, tirelessly working to influence positive change.

Bridianne O’Dea

The newly appointed Little Heroes Professor of Child and Adolscent Mental Health, Bridianne O’Dea is an emerging world leader in youth mental health. For the past 10 years, Bridi has led a rigorous research program at the Black Dog Institute, UNSW Sydney, which uses new digital technologies to improve the mental health of young people. Her work spans across prevention and treatment research in schools, clinical settings, and the community. Bridi’s vision is to ensure that all young people have timely access to high-quality mental healthcare.

Alex May

Alex May is a recipient of the Holly Thredgold Scholarship who has a special interest in women and society, particularly new mothers. Alex’s PhD through Breakthrough offers foundational and innovative research by providing a model for early detection and a modern approach to early intervention so that in future, mothers, babies, and families can receive the rapid and targeted help that they need to thrive.

Pip Granfield

Pip Granfield is a PhD candidate in the Embrace Impact Lab, within Flinders University’s College of Nursing and Health Sciences. With a broad interest in body image, her current focus is evaluating the Embrace Kids classroom program and film, which aim to foster healthy body image in 9–14-year-olds.

Kasia Robinson

Kasia has been a recipient of Breakthrough’s Lauren Corena Scholarship. Her research focused on the concept of perfectionism, and how perfectionism contributes to the development and maintenance of eating disorders.

Emerauld

Emerauld is an up and coming indie rock/pop artist from Regional SA. Emerauld’s sound has been compared to the likes of Paramore, Alex Lahey and Billie Eilish. “I’ve been writing lyrics for as long as I can remember as a way to make sense of what was going on with my life, it was a sort of coping mechanism, but has evolved into so much more!”

Rounding off a huge 2023 with performances on the NSS Stage at WOMAD, a top 40 Australian Idol Contestant, main stage performer at Barossa Beer and Cider Festival and Feast Festival and selected for Scouted 2023, then finally graduated year 12 with a music scholarship.
